SMI Deepwater Technology Workshop

- March 14, 2012

The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) held its second R&D workshop on Deepwater Technology at the Kent Ridge Guild House, NUS, as a precursor to the launch of a thematic R&D grant call in late 2012 to support relevant R&D collaboration projects between the IHLs and the industry. With the conclusion of the workshop, the SMI as well as the participants had identified possible joint projects or research areas for collaboration and funding.
The workshop, conducted on 3rd April 2012, was chaired by Executive Director of SMI, Mr Heng Chiang Gnee, and jointly organised by SMI and MI@NUS (Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering – CORE).
Our Objective
The SMI intends to provide the industry a better understanding of the latest R&D developments at the Institute of Higher Learning (IHLs) and A*STAR Research Institutes (RIs) as well as to better align the R&D focus of the academia with industry needs and identify collaboration opportunities.
Through this workshop, we aim to highlight common research challenges in deepwater technology and also to prioritize R&D focus areas. SMI plans to subsequently launch a thematic R&D grant call in Deepwater Technology to support R&D collaborative projects between the academia and the industry.
Focus Areas
The workshop will focus on the technological challenges of deepwater E&P, with emphasis on the following key areas:
(a) Deepwater structural systems (e.g. structural integrity management, hydrodynamics, wave-structure interaction, foundation systems, and moorings and risers)
(b) Subsea and pipeline technology (including AUV/ROV for subsea inspection and intervention)
Participants
Invitation to the industry spans across various clusters such as shipyards, subsea equipment manufacturers, oilfield service companies, engineering consultants, as well as the classification societies. Apart from industry representatives, SMI is also inviting researchers from the local IHLs and A*STAR RIs to attend so as to tap on the existing research capabilities residing within the schools and research centres.
