SMI Webinar: Maritime Safety in a Digital World
INTRODUCTION
We are in a VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) world, full of disruptions. We start to have a glimpse of the power of digitalisation and the new norm of how future operations could be. Human beings have been at the weakest link and more so when disruptions hit. The Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety (CEMS), a research centre jointly established by the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) and Singapore Polytechnic, embraces digital technologies in alignment with the international developments.
In the recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub Committee meeting on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW) in February 2020, it was highlighted that the human element is recognised as a key element of the safety of life on board ships and a contributing factor to most of the casualties in the shipping sector. Maritime safety and safety of navigation can be enhanced by strengthening the focus on the human element.
CEMS has developed a human factor and soft competency roadmap in close partnership with the local research ecosystem. The Centre also embraces immersive technologies to enhance training experiences which could even be done remotely. In this presentation, CEMS will share the Human Factor and Soft Competency Roadmap and Virtual Reality (VR) Enabled Training to enhance maritime safety.
