Dynamic simulation of deepwater S-lay operation

In deepwater S-lay operations, several factors combine to make the contact forces between the pipeline and the stinger more crucial. The pipeline diameter and submerged weight are usually larger than in shallow water. Dynamic loading from pipelay vessel motion and pipe sliding down the stinger causes large plastic cyclic deformation in the pipe. The risks of pipe local buckling, concentrated strain and stinger damage increase compared to the shallow water S-lay operation.

A large scale substructure experiment is constructed to simulate the pipe-stinger impact behavior and obtain the roller forces. The measured roller forces are transferred to a 3D finite element model to observe the dynamic pipe strain/stress history. Fatigue crack propagation induced by the cyclic stress is predicted. The results confirm that the combined dynamic pipelaying loading can cause significant roller force increase and extensive cyclic plastic deformation, which induce possible fatigue crack propagation in the overbend pipe section.
