Assessment of scour and soil erosion offshore
Scour in the marine environment depends on the balance between the applied forces of the fluid flow, the interaction with structures and the resistance behaviour of the soil. A conceptual model based on the Folk type soil classification has been proposed for scour offshore. This is compared with data from field surveys to provide evidence for the expected ranges of scour and the controlling effect of soil properties. A method for taking site investigation data and analysing the resulting scour profile has also been devised. The results are compared with design metocean conditions and a quantitative basis for scour hazard assessment presented. From this experience a framework is suggested to ensure a complete
life-cycle assessment to scour hazard is made in offshore projects.
