Top Projects of SMI Research Showcase April 2016

The bi-annual SMI Research Showcase April 2016 took place during the Singapore Maritime Week at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre to showcase and raise the profile of maritime and offshore research and technology in Singapore. The Research Showcase also recognised maritime research excellence where visitors were invited from 19 to 20 April to vote for their favourite research projects.

SMI is pleased to announce the Top Projects under the SMI Research Showcase April 2016 as follow:

The Top Projects were determined by a Judging Panel assessment (75% weightage) and voting by visitors of the Research Showcase (25% weightage). Each of the Top Projects would be awarded S$3,000.

In addition to engineering R&D projects, two policy research projects by researchers from the Singapore University of Technology & Design and the Singapore Management University also participated in the SMI Research Showcase for the first time under a “Out-of-Competition” arrangement. The highest voted policy research project, which thus garnered a Special Mention, is as follows:

About the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI)

The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) is a joint effort by the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Established in Jan 2011, the mission of the SMI is to make a difference through world-class R&D, training & education and thought leadership in policy formulation for the maritime industry. The SMI aims to develop and pursue strategies and programmes in order to further enhance the development of the maritime industry. Key focus areas of the SMI include sectors such as shipping, port and maritime services as well as offshore and marine engineering.

SMI will partner with both the Institutes of Higher Learning and the Research Institutions under A*STAR to work closely with the industry to develop and grow the industry through knowledge and innovation. SMI will work towards attracting renowned academics and researchers to base in Singapore and groom the next generation of local maritime talent to meet the needs of the industry.
