SUMMARY:SMI Webinar – Future Ships: Perspectives from Classification Societies
DESCRIPTION:The shipping industry is constantly transforming in order to adapt to changing regulatory requirements, challenges from global trends and developments, and technology advancements. The rapid spread of COVID-19 has disrupted standard shipping operations such as crew change. The IMO 2050 decarbonisation goal has raised uncertainty around the type and availability of future fuels for shipping. Speed of innovation for vessel and port operating systems are increasing the rate of obsolescence. These are some of the major shifts that are raising challenges for vessel owners and operators to maintain the effectiveness of a ship during its life cycle. Can a ship be future-proofed? How can we re-think the process of ship design to extend the life cycle of a ship? How can we incorporate technologies to enhance ship operations and performance amidst these changes?Representatives from four global classification societies will address these questions and share their ideas and views on how the industry can innovate future ship design.Details of the session are as follows:Date Thursday, 28 January 2021Time 1600 – 1730 (SGT, GMT+8)PROGRAMME1600 – 1605Welcome RemarksDr Sanjay C.
