SMI Webinar: Alternative Fuels for International Shipping
The enforcement of new and tighter emission standards by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), calling for a reduction in total annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the global shipping sector by at least 50% by 2050, relative to the GHG level in 2008, has led the shipping industry to explore how to radically decarbonise.
The presentation by the Maritime Energy and Sustainable Development (MESD) Centre of Excellence will provide an overview of the MESD study report on “Alternative Fuels for International Shipping”. An outline of the presentation includes:
- State-of-the-art of alternative fuels throughout their value chain
- Assessment of individual types of alternative fuels, existing technological barriers and identification of realistic timeframe to facilitate GHG emission reduction for the shipping industry
- Projection of potential scenarios for the diversification of alternative fuels
- GHG emission reduction of alternative fuels in terms of onboard and life cycle perspective
- Potential pathways to meet IMO’s 2050 emission target
