SUMMARY:Review of Recent Developments and Unsolved Problems in Vortex Induced Vibrations
DESCRIPTION:The formation of the Karman street behind bluff bodies placed within a cross-flow is ubiquitous. It constitutes an interesting problem for the theoretician and can cause significant problems for systems used in ocean, coastal, and offshore engineering, including cables, hawsers, risers, and large floating structures. We review recent developments in this interesting topic, that model vortex-induced vibrations as a dynamic equilibrium between the instability of the flow and the resonant response of structures, and that also shed light on the effect of the Reynolds number, the structural properties of the system, the shape and surface condition of the body, and the level of turbulence in the flow. We also review unsolved problems that keep intense interest on the topic. For online registration, click HERE.
