International and national legislation for new ports or extensions of existing ports are incorporating these issues and are increasingly based on strict regulations aiming at creating designs with minimised environmental impact and sustainable operations in the long-term. There are several drivers (or policies) to make ports greener including regulation, information, incentives, and technology upgrades. However, the environment could also be an economic opportunity in a more fundamental way. The domain of port industrial development is one area in which the environment presents new economic opportunities.Further, there is a good business case for making a port greener. Large shippers and shipping lines have become more environment-conscious and expect the same from ports. Greening ports and logistics could therefore be used as a marketing tool to generate new business. There are also cost savings from green policies, such as more energy-efficient processes. There are also complementary aspects of port environmental and transport policies. For example, modal shifts and port gate strategies have positive effects on the environment and on easing urban congestion. In this lecture, the above issues on green ports will be discussed.About the speakerDr. MOON has been a professor of World Maritime University (WMU) by holding an INMARSAT CHAIR Professorship since 2008. Prof MOON earned his PhD degree in Port Economics from the Cardiff University, UK. His area of teaching and research interest has been closely related to ports in terms of management, operations, planning, development and logistics. He also has a specialty in MET based upon his experiences in educating students at Korea Maritime University (KMU) where he has worked for more than 27 years. He has got a qualified First Class Navigation Certificate (non-limited) and been aboard the ship more than 10 years including experiences of a chief mate at HMM and a captain at KMU Training Ship. He has widely published articles and books which are concerned with ports and MET. He has been involved in many research projects for public organisations as well as private companies.
