The Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) and Maritime Institute @National University of Singapore (MI@NUS) will be jointly organising a workshop on Asset Integrity & Risk Management, which is a strategic area under the SMI R&D roadmap for the offshore sector. This workshop serves as a platform for various parties to share and discuss initiatives and also a potential prelude to grant call initiatives by SMI.
Oil & gas is expected to remain the world’s key energy source for the world through 2035. In oil & gas E&P, safe and reliable operations are of paramount importance to the industry. The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 sent awaking signals that asset integrity should never be compromised and risk management is critical to ensure lives and marine environment are safeguarded.
While operators are stretching the existing reserves with assets that are reaching their design service life, these aged assets are often susceptible to failures due to mechanical degradation and harsh offshore environment. Oil exploration has also inevitably moved into deep-sea and the offshore assets installed in deeper water are increasingly inaccessible. The associated cost of E&P increases exponentially for deep-water regions resulting in the needs for technological innovations in asset integrity & risk management. Integrity assessment and risk management solutions, anticipation of possible failures of systems and emergency response plans in the event of asset failure would be critical.
