SUMMARY:Marine pipelaying research in China
DESCRIPTION:Marine pipelines are generally laid on the seabed by pipelaying vessels. With delivery of “Hai Yang Shi You 201” on May 15th, the 4 million cost flagship of CNOOC, China has achieved the ability to lay pipe to the depth of 3000m. Laying pipe with s-lay vessel brings many mechanical problems during the design and construction of both pipelay vessel and marine pipes. There are serious issues of environmental loads from wave, wind and current. But also very important are the buckling of pipe, pipe interaction with vessel and stinger and fatigue of the stinger. Pipe-soil interaction has been studied for many years, on the problem of pipe-soil interaction force, pipe buckling, pipe fatigue, etc. Similar problems occur in overbend between the pipe and stinger during s-lay operation, which cause pipe buckling, overstress and even stinger destroyed. A sub-structure experiment has been carried out to observe the impact between pipe and stinger caused by pipelay vessel motion. Long distance voyage with stinger standby on the vessel stern between dock and field is a severe operation condition. Compared with the pipelaying operation, lacking of the pipeline lying on it, the 90m long stinger shakes dramatically under the pipelay vessel motion, which may cause the failure and fatigue of the stinger from a long term view.For more details, click HERE
