Subsea Production in has seen a recent and rapid transformation in the Brazilian Santos and Campos basins due to the exploitation of deep reserves in the pre-salt area which has led to a very rapid development of new production in ultra deep water methods to deal with the challenges that are faced. This short presentation highlights one example of innovative riser technology that has been developed by Subsea 7 specifically for the Guara Lula subsea project in the Santos Basin which seeks to resolve some of the major challenges in installation and operation of deep water riser systems in difficult and hostile environments.

Subsea 7 is one of the leading global subsea construction contractors and tries to differentiate itself in offering new technologies and installation methods and was selected for this project in part through its innovative thinking. This however brings significant risk to its operations andnot everything has gone smoothly on the Guara Lula project as will be highlighted within the presentation.

The presentation also touches on some of the challenges faced in first deployment of new technologies and the risks that are faced when moving from a development and experimental environment into a real offshore operational phase and seeks to share some of the operational constraints and difficulties faced when working in hostile deepwater locations.
