Inaugural World Congress on Maritime Heritage
The inaugural World Congress on Maritime Heritage – themed Connecting with the Past to Navigate the Future – will be held from the 13-15 March in Singapore. It is hosted by the Consortium for International Maritime Heritage (CIMH), with the support of International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Congress of Maritime Museums (ICMM) and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) amongst others.
For the first time, the event will bring together from over 30 countries, a diverse global array of influential maritime constituent groups across industry, institutions and organizations concerned with maritime heritage, that is the history of human involvement in seafaring, port & marine, tourism, fishing, academia, environmentalists, and maritime culture. The Congress aims to foster a unique opportunity for all to form new partnerships towards achieving a common objective, and to secure a sustainable future of how humans are to be involved with the ocean, coastal land and waters.
The broad geographical influence, economic and multicultural span of Singapore’s maritime heritage and status as a major world port and maritime nation provide an excellent opportunity to advance consideration of these matters. Singapore’s own maritime past is deeply intertwined with the history of maritime communities from all over the world.
As 2019 will mark 200 years of history for Singapore, there can be no better time or place for the Congress to be held here, to coincide with the commemoration of the nation’s bicentennial milestone. The event will benefit greatly from the learning and sharing of Singapore’s own developmental experiences in promoting peaceful, regional maritime environment and Singapore’s sustained relevance in the global maritime space.
