CORE Seminar: “The Design of a New Acoustic Tool”
Abstract
The steps that a company like Halliburton goes about designing a new downhole logging tool, specifically, an acoustic logging tool, will be presented. How one goes from the earth properties one desires to measure, to understanding the physics of elastic wave propagation in a borehole, to defining the requirements of the tool, and the flow from the requirements to the specification, and steps one take to verify that the requirements are met. The final steps involved are the testing in various environments, from the laboratory to the test well to running in client wells. The skills sets and tools necessary for the whole process are diverse and will be discussed in details.
Profile of Speaker
Dr. Arthur Cheng is the Senior Manager for Acoustics and Borehole Seismics at Halliburton. He received a B.Sc. with Distinction in Engineering Physics from Cornell University in 1973, and a Sc.D. in Geophysics from MIT in 1978. He was one of the co-founders of the Earth Resources Laboratory at MIT in 1982, and was Project Leader of the MIT Borehole Acoustics and Logging Consortium until 1996, when he joined Western Atlas as Manager of Acoustic Science. He has also worked for Baker Atlas, Baker Hughes Inteq, and OHM RockSolidImages in various managerial capacities, as well as consulting for a number of different companies.
Dr. Cheng has served on a number of academic and industry positions through the years; he is currently an Associate Editor for Geophysics in Borehole Geophysics and Rock Properties, and a member of the SEG Foundation Board of Directors (2012-2014). He received the Life Membership Award from SEG in 2013. Previously he was the Vice President of the SEG Executive Committee (2009-2010), Chair of the SEAM Board of Directors (2008-2009); Chair of the SEG Research Committee (2005-2006), and a member of the Visiting Committee for the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at MIT (2004-2008).
