SUMMARY:CORE Seminar “Scenario Based Optimization of a Container Vessel with Respect to its Projected Operating Conditions”
DESCRIPTION:AbstractAt least since the economical crisis the traditional way of designing ships with respect to only one specific operating condition is considered to be outdated. Operating ships at off-design conditions may appear as a good solution in times of crisis and apparently leads to lower fuel consumption. There is a potential to save even more full if the vessels would have been designed with respect to more operating conditions. Furthermore and even without the crisis the process of ship design process had to be reconsidered for the fact, that due to constantly changing economical and ecological developments ships in real life only operate at their designated design point for a small amount of time. These problems necessitate a new approach which is capable to deal with future needs and uncertainties and which considers the vessels life-long operating situation. Keeping that in mind, scenario methods seem to be a suitable solution. By linking economical trend analysis with detailed operational profiles the usage of these methods offer the possibility to design ships which are not optimized to one or few particular operational conditions but will be significantly more efficient related to their overall operating time. In the course of this approach there are two questions coming up: How can the respective operating conditions be found and in which way or how strong does the usage of an operational profile affect the actual ship design? In order to find answers to these questions, the design optimization of a operational “robust” container vessel with a parametrically modeled bulbous bow based on a statistically developed operational profile will be presented in this presentation.SpeakerJonas WagnerFaculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology Department, University of RostockDipl.-Ing. Jonas Wagner graduated in 2009 and since then is working as scientific assistant at the Chair of Ship Design at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology of the University of Rostock. In his research he is developing new optimization approaches to be applied within the early ship design process especially focusing on scenario based methods. He was an active partner in numerous research projects funded by the EU with a focus on collaboration in engineering education. He is a member of the German Society for Maritime Technology and has been contributing to conferences like the &#8220;International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures (PRADS)&#8221;, the &#8220;International Marine Design Conference (IMDC)&#8221; and the &#8220;International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding (ICCAS)&#8221;.To register, kindly click HERE.
