CORE Seminar on “Fracture Mechanics in Offshore Applications – From Fundamentals to Engineering Assessments”
Abstract
Offshore platforms often nucleate fatigue cracks near hot-spot locations caused by cyclic environmental actions. The initiation and propagation of such cracks impose critical threats to the safe operation of these structures. The applied fracture mechanics to assess these cracks/flaws in offshore structures faces a number of fundamental bottlenecks, despite six decades of research efforts in understanding the fracture mechanics and mechanisms in steels and metallic materials. This seminar summarizes the recent developments in our research team and focuses on: 1) the procedures to quantify the material fracture resistance for non-conventional fracture specimens (mixed-mode and surface crack specimens); 2) the scalability from the material-level fracture resistance measured from small-scale specimens to the representation of fracture failure in structure level tubular joints and structures; and 3) engineering critical assessments of welded tubular connections.
About the speaker
Dr. QIAN Xudong is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his Bachelor (1st Class Honors) and PhD in Civil Engineering from NUS in 2000 and 2005, respectively. Prior to joining NUS as a faculty member, he worked as a post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC). Prof Qian’s research interest focuses on experimental fracture mechanics, fracture and fatigue assessment for steel/offshore structures, welded tubular connections, steel-concrete-steel composite structures, and polymer composite materials for deep-water applications. Prof Qian has been serving as members in different Technical Committees for the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress.
The seminar is free and open for registration online HERE.
