Abstract

The Engineering Mechanics Department at IHPC performs research on the mechanics and the mechanical properties of materials by using and developing novel computational methods and techniques. In this presentation, we report on some of our recent ongoing work related to the offshore sector. First, we briefly touch upon the mechanics of the shear ram which is an important component of the BOP used to cut the drill string in case of an emergency. We focus on employing the fracture locus criterion based on the extended Mohr-Coulomb criterion to evaluate the sensitivity and quality of the predicted shear force to availability and or accuracy of drill pipe material data. Next, we present some recent work on unbounded flexible risers. A feature of flexible risers that makes analysis challenging is the large discrepancy between the characteristic length scale of components, loads and interactions occurring within the flexible pipe structure and the characteristic length scale of hydrodynamic loads and large-scale motion of the structure. Reliable constitutive model describing flexible pipe response at the level of pipe cross-sections are being developed to estimate the structural performance of flexible pipes and to evaluate the risk of failure.

About the Speaker

Dr Sridhar Narayanaswamy joined IHPC in August 2011 and is the Deputy Director of the Engineering Mechanics Department. After getting his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Sridhar was with Teledyne Imaging and Scientific at Thousand Oaks, California till August 2011. His primary research areas at Teledyne were in the areas of deformation micromechanics and in composite design and reliability and he also lead the analysis effort for infrared detector systems and optimization of the package design. The focus in his current role at IHPC in on applying the computational resources available there for industry related problems of relevance and interest including the Marine and Offshore Industry.
