SUMMARY:A Load-Indentation Formulation for Cement Filled Pipe-In-Pipe Composite Structures
DESCRIPTION:Circular hollow sections have wide applications in both onshore and offshore pipelines. They are frequently subjected to external interferences, such as trawl gears from fishing vessels, heavy objects like anchors and excavation equipments as well as moving debris. These external interferences may cause pipelines to rupture and to leak, resulting in environmental problems and large losses in economic. Cement filled pipe-in-pipe composite structures have recently emerged as a popular solution to enhance the structural resistance against external loadings. Engineering applications of such pipe-inpipe composite structures requires an improved understanding on the lateral loadindentation (P-δ) relationship. This presentation shows theP-δ response of pipe-in-pipe structure infilled with the Ultra Lightweight Cementitious Composite (ULCC). Based on a combined experimental and numerical investigation, this study proposes a two-stage analytical approach to estimate the P-δ relationship for the composite pipes, namely the composite stage and the separation stage. The composite stage corresponds to the initial P-δ response of the composite pipe, in which the steel and the cement material assume full composite action due to the high confinement to the cement material by the two steel pipes. At a large indentation level, the steel and the cement material behave independently due to the separation between the steel-cement contact surfaces. This study thus develops an independent formulation for the separation stage. Comparison of the proposed P-δ relationship with the experimental data confirms the accuracy of the two-stage approach. For registration, please click HERE.
